A state championship semifinal for under-20 football teams in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais has concluded with a new world record, featuring a total of 53 red cards shown during a single match. The incident occurred on Sunday during the first leg of the tie between Uberlandia and Mamore, which descended into widespread chaos following a significant on-field dispute.

Referee Fernando Patrick Drosghic Modesto documented the events in his official match report. He noted that the trouble began early in the second half when several Uberlandia officials entered the field of play after one of their players was dismissed. The game was subsequently paused for 40 minutes before play resumed, with Mamore eventually taking a 3-1 lead by scoring in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

According to reports from Brazilian media outlets, the final spark for the mass confrontation was a taunt by Mamore player Davi during the celebration of that late goal. This provocation triggered a general brawl that involved a large number of individuals from both teams, leading to the referee’s decision to terminate the match due to the lack of security and the overall turmoil.

The breakdown of order resulted in 43 players being sent off, along with eight members of the coaching staff. Additionally, two board members from Uberlandia were also dismissed from the match. In his written account, Drosghic Modesto stated that a generalized brawl broke out in the 54th minute of the second half, making it impossible to display the red cards and complete the standard closing protocols for the game.

The referee emphasized that the match was declared ended because of the intense disorder and insufficient security. He further added that a police report was filed due to threats made against him. The situation remained tense even after the final whistle, as Mamore’s team reportedly vandalized the dressing room following the conclusion of the contest.

This event supersedes the previous Guinness World Record for the most red cards in a single match, which stood at 36. That record was set in February 2011 during a fifth-division game in Argentina between Atletico Claypole and Victoriano Arenas. The new record highlights the extreme level of conflict that can arise in competitive youth football when tensions escalate beyond control.

In the aftermath of the incident, Uberlandia announced on Wednesday that it would forfeit the second leg of the semifinal. The club cited a gesture of fair play as the reason, noting that Mamore did not have enough eligible players remaining to field a full team. This decision effectively allowed Mamore to qualify for the tournament final without playing the return fixture.

Uberlandia also addressed the internal handling of the situation in a public statement. The club confirmed that appropriate disciplinary measures had already been taken against those involved. They emphasized that athletic development is primarily a matter of personal development, suggesting that the internal response was focused on the growth and behavior of the individuals involved in the brawl.

The incident has drawn significant attention to the state of youth football in the region, with the sheer number of red cards serving as a stark indicator of the match's intensity. The combination of player and staff dismissals, along with the involvement of board members, underscores the deep-seated rivalry and the high stakes involved in this particular state championship.

As the teams prepare for the final stages of the tournament, the memory of the chaotic semifinal will remain a defining moment for both clubs. The official recognition of the record by Guinness World Records further cements the event in football history, marking it as one of the most unusual and dramatic matches in recent memory.
