A 10-year-old girl who was taken from her Canby apartment early Wednesday was found safe that same afternoon. The U.S. Marshals Service reported that tactical teams rescued her from a residence in Oregon City. She was discovered tied up in a closet and was transported to a hospital for care.
Investigators said the incident began at 1:39 a.m. when a man entered the apartment. He injured a 12-year-old child and took the 10-year-old. The older child was rushed to the hospital and remained under treatment as of Wednesday afternoon.
Vince Edgar Chavez attempted to flee through the rear of the Oregon City home. U.S. Marshals arrested him at the scene.
The Canby Police Department explained that an Amber Alert was not issued because they had not yet collected the specific information required to trigger one. Parents are cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Carus Elementary, where the missing girl is a student, deployed extra police officers during Wednesday's afternoon dismissal. The school district stated this was done out of an abundance of caution.
The district said, “Our hearts are with this child and her family.” They added, “Please know that we are here to support our students, staff and families in whatever ways we can.”
