The Magic City Classic, billed as the largest historically Black college and university football game in the United States, took place in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday. The event draws large crowds to the city, placing a heavy burden on local law enforcement resources.

Around 7:50 p.m. on Saturday, officers responded to the 400 block of Graymont Avenue following reports of a shooting. The Birmingham Police Department suspended all tailgating in the area immediately upon arrival.

Authorities confirmed that one person died in the incident. At least eight others sustained injuries. As of early Sunday morning, police reported that one victim remained in critical condition while the other seven were in stable condition. No police officers or first responders were hurt during the response.

Investigators recovered multiple firearms at the scene. One individual was detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning. The specific details of the exchange between the victims and the shooter are still under review.

Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett described the event as a "senseless act of violence." He noted that the game is the largest event in the city and is "extremely taxing" on personnel. Pickett stated that other law enforcement leaders quickly offered support and that he was grateful for the rapid response.

Pickett praised the courage of his officers, describing how they ran toward the gunfire to triage people and render aid. He said the officers displayed "true dedication" to saving lives and expressed thanks that they were able to return to their families that night.
