Chris Gibb won the mayoral race in the Town of Amherstburg on Monday, according to unofficial results. He collected 3,928 votes to claim the seat. Bill Fryer finished second with 3,284 votes. Incumbent Michael Prue received 1,704 votes.
Gibb previously served as deputy mayor during the last term. He replaces Prue, who held the position of mayor since 2018. The town council will see several new members in the coming four-year term.
Gibb addressed a crowd of family and supporters at The O on Monday night. He described his feelings as excited and humbled. He stated that he is ready to begin working with the new council and the new deputy mayor to move the town forward.
"Very excited, very excited, humbled, a little overwhelmed, but I'm ready to get started," Gibb said. He added that he believes the mayor serves everyone, regardless of how they voted.
Gibb said he plans to implement plans developed over the past four years. He intends to work with the new council to determine their priorities. He noted that residents wanted change, which influenced his campaign strategy.
Prue held a small gathering at Artisan Grill with family and friends. He said he will retire to travel with his wife, read, cook, and fish with a friend this spring. Prue commented on the new leadership composition.
"I'm not sure what that direction is because it's very difficult for me to understand how they would pick a mayor and a deputy mayor who are so diametrically opposed.. but that is what the town has just chosen," Prue said. He explained that he ran because residents asked him to seek another term and promised tax reductions.
