Residents of the Town of Tecumseh voted on Monday to replace their long-serving mayor with a former deputy.
Joe Bachetti secured the top position with 7,017 votes in the unofficial results. Gary McNamara received 2,704 votes. The gap between the two candidates reflects a decisive shift in local leadership. Bachetti had served as deputy mayor for the previous 12 years. McNamara held office for 35 years, first winning a council seat in 1991 and becoming mayor in 2003.
Bachetti described the outcome as phenomenal. He stated that the numbers represent neighbors, families, and friends. He aims to restore a sense of welcome for the town's population. He emphasized his accessibility during his campaign. He said he answered phones, visited sites, and provided solutions. He noted that residents often told him they already had their vote made up while he was campaigning.
McNamara expressed pride in his 31-year tenure in elected roles. He acknowledged disappointment in the final numbers but called his run successful. He congratulated Bachetti and his team for a hard-fought campaign. He wished the new council great success in moving the community forward. McNamara plans to spend more time with his wife, four grandchildren, and children.
The deputy mayoral race was won by Tania Jobin. She received 5,773 votes. Larry Morand placed second with 3,558 votes. Five candidates were elected to the Tecumseh council. Darrin Drouillard received 1,370 votes. Incumbent James Dorner received 1,594 votes. Chris Elliott received 1,213 votes. Cheryl Hardcastle received 781 votes. Marisa Nabbout received 737 votes.
The Municipal Clerk will certify the official results on Tuesday, October 27. Until that certification is complete, all figures remain unofficial.
