Glenbard High School District 87 officials confirmed on Sunday that recent graduates were among the victims of a mass shooting in downstate Bloomington. One nineteen year old woman was killed in the incident, and seven other people sustained injuries.
Police report that the shooting occurred at a house party at approximately 1:20 a.m. on Sunday near Illinois Wesleyan University. A second woman who was initially listed in critical condition has shown signs of improvement, according to Bloomington police. The names of the victims have not yet been released to the public.
District 87 Superintendent Jessica Santee addressed the loss in a statement. She noted that the connection to students does not end when they graduate and that they remain part of the school community. Santee stated that the news would be especially difficult for the teachers, staff, and classmates who knew the victims.
Leadership at Glenbard North High School has been in communication with families, students, and staff. The administration is working to provide assistance while respecting the privacy of those directly affected by the tragedy.
