Four people sustained injuries when gunfire broke out at a youth football championship on Sunday night in Madison, Illinois. One victim died at the scene, while the other three were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The incident occurred at Madison Senior High School around 9:50 p.m. Although the facility is a public high school, organizers noted the game was unrelated to the district’s own athletic program. The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis assumed control of the investigation shortly after the event concluded.
The shooting followed a weekend of play that drew families and players to the school grounds. When the gunfire erupted, emergency responders moved to secure the area. The fourth victim did not survive the initial trauma and was pronounced dead on the field.
Lt. Andrew Pierson, the public information officer for the Major Case Squad, urged residents to provide any details they might have observed. “You do not have to have the whole story, a single photo, a short video, or one detail you think is insignificant may be exactly what moves this investigation forward,” Pierson said. He emphasized that even minor observations could help investigators piece together the sequence of events.
The school district canceled classes for Monday and plans to resume the academic week on Wednesday. In a statement, the district expressed sadness over the violence, noting that it impacts the entire school community despite the event’s external organization. Counseling and support services are available to students and staff.
Investigators are asking the public to call the command post at 618-709-7750 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477 with information.
