For the individuals and firms that placed bets on Anthropic during its early days, the upcoming public offering represents a defining moment of financial validation. While the company has not yet set a final date for its initial public offering, market expectations suggest a listing could occur within the current year. If the anticipated valuation of up to $2 trillion materializes, the windfall for shareholders will be substantial. However, even before the stock begins trading publicly, the current private market valuation of $965 billion has already transformed many of these early positions into multi-billion-dollar assets. The disparity between the initial entry prices and today's market value highlights the sheer scale of the gains accrued by those who invested when the company was a smaller startup.

The numbers behind these stakes reveal a dramatic appreciation in value over a relatively short period. According to data from Bloomberg, the value of holdings for key investors is determined by the company's latest private round. This valuation serves as the baseline for calculating current wealth, ignoring the potential upside from an IPO. For some, the gains have been exponential, driven by early entry points when the company's worth was a fraction of its current standing. For others, who entered at later stages, the absolute dollar amounts remain massive, reflecting the enormous capital flows into the AI sector in recent years.

Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, stands out as one of the most significant individual beneficiaries. He participated in Anthropic's Series A round in 2021, a time when the startup was valued at just $461 million according to PitchBook. That early conviction has paid off handsomely, with Schmidt now holding approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion. This figure represents a massive return on investment, illustrating how early access to a leading AI lab can reshape an investor's net worth almost overnight in market terms.

Institutional investors have also seen their portfolios swell considerably. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a check for $6 billion to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. Despite entering at such a high valuation, that late-stage bet is now worth $17 billion. If the company achieves the projected IPO valuation, Iconiq's position has the potential to double again. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested more than $1 billion over time. That accumulated stake is currently valued at $14 billion, cementing the firm's position as a major shareholder in the AI landscape.

Sequoia Capital, a well-known venture capital firm, took a different approach by entering the market more recently. It first backed Anthropic earlier this year, when the company was already valued at $380 billion. By investing $3 billion, Sequoia secured about 1% ownership. Although its entry point was much higher than that of the 2021 investors, the rapid appreciation in value means its investment has already more than doubled. This trajectory suggests that even late-stage entry into a high-growth sector can yield significant short-term returns, provided the company maintains its momentum toward a public listing.

Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also increased its exposure to the AI giant. The firm initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since added another $400 million to its portfolio. This combined investment has resulted in a stake worth billions today. Notably, Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch his own venture capital firm, but the financial legacy of the Sound Ventures bet on Anthropic remains significant for the original partners and the firm's overall performance.

Perhaps the most striking example of growth is that of Spark Capital, the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a value of $7 billion. Such a multiplier on investment is rare in the tech sector and underscores the aggressive valuation growth that has characterized Anthropic's trajectory from a private startup to a potential trillion-dollar public entity.

The stakes for these investors are now tied to the company's ability to execute a successful IPO. While the private market valuations are already robust, the public listing could introduce new volatility and liquidity options. For the backers mentioned, the difference between a $965 billion valuation and a $2 trillion valuation represents billions of dollars in additional wealth. As the company prepares for its debut on the public markets, the focus will shift from private fundraising to meeting public market expectations, with these early and late-stage investors watching closely to see if the projected windfalls become reality.
