Jay-Z has secured the headlining slot for the Super Bowl LXI halftime show, marking a direct transfer of influence from his entertainment empire to the NFL's premier commercial event. The 56-year-old artist will take the stage on February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
The booking stems from a structural shift in how the league manages its entertainment arm. Since 2019, Roc Nation, Jay-Z's production company, has held the contract to produce the halftime spectacle. This arrangement granted the rapper authority over performer selection, a power he exercised by choosing himself for the role.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed that the arrangement was a long-term strategic goal for the league. Goodell stated that when the initial deal with Roc Nation was finalized, he requested that Jay-Z eventually perform on the stage. The commissioner described the artist's impact on the show's cultural footprint as extraordinary.
"From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey," Jay-Z said in a release accompanying the announcement. "Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world's biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true."
The performance will be the first time the hip-hop mogul has appeared at the halftime show in any capacity. The event is scheduled to coincide with the launch of the JAŸ-Z30 Tour, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, and the 25th anniversary of Blueprint. The tour has kept the artist on the road, maintaining high visibility for the upcoming football season.
The announcement was made via social media, featuring a video set to the track "Public Service Announcement." The NFL has not yet confirmed a lineup of special guests, though speculation centers on Beyoncé. She headlined the 2013 halftime show and performed alongside Coldplay and Bruno Mars in 2016. The couple have collaborated on numerous songs and have toured together previously.
Previous halftime headliners in recent years include Bad Bunny, who performed last year, and Kendrick Lamar, who headlined two years ago with special guest SZA. Other rappers to take the stage this decade include Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and Lil Jon. The 2027 event will mark the continuation of a trend where major hip-hop acts anchor the mid-game entertainment segment.
