Ciara Mageean has announced she will proceed with her training regimen despite a recent cancer diagnosis. The Irish middle-distance runner, who turned 30 earlier this year, said she is treating the illness as part of her ongoing athletic career. She stated that she is going on the adventure of treatment because she has decided to give it everything.

Mageean received the diagnosis after an appointment with her sister Máire and her husband Thomas Moran. She described herself as unlucky and recalled walking out of the medical office with tears in her eyes. Her partner, whom she married last month, has been a key support in her life. She noted that he is deeply invested in her goals and often holds her up during difficult moments.

The runner has a history of overcoming physical setbacks. In 2026, she faced a bone spur injury in her ankle that required surgery when she was 20 years old. At that time, her coach Jerry Kiernan helped her understand her identity beyond running. She also missed the Paris Olympics due to an injury, a loss she described as a weight she chose to carry rather than a burden that defined her.

Mageean won gold in the 1500m at the 2024 European Championships. She recalled feeling super nervous on the day but focused on hearing the Irish national anthem. She said she did not grow up playing camogie to get boxed in, a reference to the Gaelic game that ignited her competitive spirit. Her early years in camogie taught her to control her emotions and harness her ambition.

The athlete grew up in Dublin and initially considered a career in athletics over camogie. She dreamed of the Olympics and chose the track to represent Ireland at the highest level. For many years, she was labeled as the next Sonia O’Sullivan, a comparison she accepted while working to establish her own legacy. She stated that she hoped one day people would see her as Ciara Mageean rather than a successor to another athlete.

Her upcoming plans include an altitude training camp, a detail she prefers to discuss over wedding logistics. She and Moran got engaged on New Year’s Eve but have not set a specific date for their celebration. Mageean emphasized the importance of cherishing the present, telling people to stop and smell the roses because life is not always fair. She aims to share hope and kindness with those around her while continuing to compete.

Mageean said she has faith in people and in the power of verbalizing joy. She intends to let fear, anger, and sadness exist without allowing them to become overwhelming. Her goal is to celebrate the good things in life, from time spent in the garden with future children to moments of rest. She remains grateful for the support she has received from her community and her partner.
