Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson suffered a thumb injury on the first play of the game against the Buffalo Bills.
The two-time MVP dropped back to pass and collided with Bills linebacker Greg Rousseau on the follow-through. Jackson jogged off the field holding his hand motionless. The team initially listed him as questionable to return, but ruled him out minutes later. Coach Jesse Minter confirmed after the game that Jackson requires surgery and will be placed on injured reserve.
With Jackson out, backup Tyler Huntley took over the offense. Huntley had started the previous three games while Jackson recovered from an ankle sprain, posting a 1-2 record. The Bills took a 7-0 lead on their opening drive.
Midway through the second quarter, Huntley suffered a toe injury while trailing 13-7. He was twisted on a tackle by Bills defensive lineman Ed Oliver. Huntley was ruled out at halftime, leaving the Ravens without their first two quarterbacks.
The team turned to 25-year-old Joe Fagnano, who had not played a snap in the NFL since going undrafted out of UConn in April. Fagnano completed two of four passes for 28 yards on his first possession. That drive ended with a missed 34-yard field goal by Tyler Loop.
Fagnano finished the game 10 of 21 for 91 yards and one interception. The Bills won 36-10. The Ravens sit at 4-3 on the season.
Jackson and Huntley will not return for Baltimore's next game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night.
