Cassidy Schutz, a certified learning specialist at Silver Rail Elementary School, has spoken publicly for the first time since engaging a gunman in a deadly confrontation. In a statement released by Bend-La Pine Schools on Friday, the teacher described the chaotic moments of the October 15 incident. She characterized the event as a "horrific and heartbreaking tragedy" that represents the reality of the school community's lives rather than a story.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed that Schutz threw her cellphone at the shooter. He stated that she wrestled the teen for the shotgun he was carrying. Her actions assisted the father of a student, Kaylub Giamanco, in taking down the armed attacker. Officials have praised the teacher's efforts for helping to save lives during the brief exchange of violence.

The shooting occurred on October 15 when a 16-year-old former student entered the elementary school. The teen fired into a special needs classroom. Teacher Megan Lambert, 25, was killed in the attack. Three students also lost their lives: Rhoam Summer, 5, and two other children, ages 8 and 11. The shooter was killed at the scene. Two others survived the shooting: teacher Becky Drury and a 7-year-old girl.

In her written remarks, Schutz expressed deep sadness and said her thoughts were with the families of the deceased and the injured. She noted that the events unfolded rapidly and that she wished for more time. The teacher said the pain of the loss is something she will carry forever. Her current focus is on supporting the families, the school team, and her own healing process.

Schutz asked for time, space, and privacy as she continues to process the event. She stated she will not be making any additional public statements at this time. The district released the full text of her comments to address the community's questions following the tragedy.

The Silver Rail Elementary School community remains in mourning as it processes the loss of four individuals. The police investigation concluded with the death of the shooter. The school district continues to support the surviving staff and families of the victims.
