Cincinnati residents learned Tuesday that the political map in Kentucky has shifted again. Republican Ed Gallrein won the U.S. House seat for the state’s 4th congressional district, defeating Democrat Melissa Strange in the general election. The Associated Press projected the victory, securing the seat for the party of President Donald Trump.

Gallrein’s path to victory began in May when he defeated incumbent Rep. Thomas Massie in a primary contest that became the most expensive in U.S. House history. A former Navy SEAL and farmer, Gallrein had previously sought a Senate seat before Trump backed his campaign against Massie. The President visited Northern Kentucky University to rally support for the challenger, an event where Gallrein also addressed the crowd.

Gallrein framed his decision to run as a direct response to the President’s invitation. “So when President Trump called, I got off the tractor, I left the farm and I answered that call,” Gallrein told supporters. He described the role as another mission to serve the public and protect the republic. Trump urged attendees to treat the midterm elections with high stakes, telling voters to “pretend I’m on the ballot” and go out to vote.

The campaign focused on five specific priorities listed on Gallrein’s website: unleashing the economy, securing the border, defending gun rights, protecting the unborn, and ending what the site called the woke agenda. Gallrein argued that schools, the military, and the government should prioritize excellence and patriotism over ideology. His economic platform promised to cut taxes, reduce regulations, and stop spending that drove up inflation to bring jobs back to Kentucky.

Gallrein will assume office in January 2027, replacing Massie in Congress.
