Nine people are dead and 40 are wounded after gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud. The attack occurred on Friday in Karak governorate, a location situated roughly 120 kilometres southwest of Amman. Witnesses described the gunfire as lasting for several minutes before the scene was secured.
Security forces moved quickly to locate the perpetrators. State television reported on Monday that officers arrested three armed suspects. The men were hiding in an abandoned house in Karak when they were tracked down. According to the Public Security Directorate, the suspects refused to surrender and began shooting at the officers. Forces returned fire, wounding all three men before taking them into custody.
The directorate confirmed that no security personnel were injured during the exchange. Officers recovered multiple firearms and ammunition from the detained men. Authorities have not released the suspects' names or identified specific ties to Islamist militant organizations. The government has labeled the attackers as extremist terrorists, although no group has formally claimed responsibility for the violence.
King Abdullah has ordered security forces to respond with an iron fist to the assault. The King is a key United States partner in the region's campaign against Islamist militant groups. This order signals a hard line approach to the rare attack on the country's Christian minority, a group that is typically safe in the stable Middle Eastern nation.
Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya stated that officials are examining the circumstances that pushed young people toward extremism. He added that anyone found to have taken part in the attack would be held accountable. The Public Security Directorate said in a statement that terrorism has no place among the people and that the suspects met their just fate.
The next step in the investigation involves a detailed review of the suspects' backgrounds. Authorities are analyzing the recovered weapons and ammunition for ballistic evidence. The wounded remain under care in local medical facilities while families of the nine victims gather in the village of Hamoud.
