Senate members have faced several health emergencies this year. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., is currently in the hospital following a stroke.
Murphy, 53, began experiencing numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon. He was at a hockey game for his son when the symptoms started. Staff took him to a local hospital, where doctors confirmed he had suffered a stroke. He was then transferred to Johns Hopkins for continued monitoring.
Allison Herwitt, the senator's chief of staff, issued a statement on Sunday regarding his condition. "He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment," Herwitt wrote. She added that Murphy is expected to make a full recovery.
This event follows a pattern of health issues among lawmakers. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., missed months of Senate work earlier in the year due to a long hospital stay and rehabilitation. Rep. Tom Kean, R-N.J., also spent months away from the Capitol for treatment for depression. In 2022, three prominent Democrats were hospitalized for strokes: Sen. Ben Ray Lujan, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, and then-candidate John Fetterman.
Murphy has served as a key campaign surrogate for Democrats during the midterm cycle. He is considered a possible contender for the 2028 presidential nomination. The senator has focused on foreign policy and oversight of the executive branch. He recently returned from a tour of the Middle East. Before leaving, he warned that President Trump would escalate the war on Iran after the midterm elections.
The senator remains at Johns Hopkins for further care. His office expects a full recovery.
