The Minnesota Vikings head to Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday looking to maintain a perfect 6-0 record. The game kicks off at noon on Fox-32. Minnesota has allowed just 12.3 points per game, the lowest total in the NFL. The Detroit Lions, currently 4-2, average 30.7 points per game. Only the Buffalo Bills score more.
The Vikings have relied on a stingy defense and strong special teams to win their first six games. Their offense has struggled to produce. Over the last five games, the Vikings have scored only four touchdowns. They average 1.5 offensive touchdowns per game, the second-lowest mark in the league. Quarterback Kyler Murray said the team needs to finish drives with touchdowns rather than field goals.
The Lions have been highly productive this season. Quarterback Jared Goff leads the NFL with a 112.5 passer rating. He averages 298 passing yards per game. Goff has thrown 14 touchdown passes without an interception. That matches the record set by Russell Wilson in 2019 for the most touchdown passes without a pick through six games. Goff has completed 223 pass attempts without being picked off.
Running back Jahmyr Gibbs is having a historic season. He is the only player in the NFL to rush for at least 40 first downs and catch passes for 10 or more first downs in the first six games of a season. The team tracks this data back to 1981. Wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams also contribute to the attack. Tight end Sam LaPorta adds another dimension to the passing game.
The two teams have a recent history in the NFC North. The Lions won four straight games against the Vikings while Brian Flores served as their defensive coordinator. Those games averaged 30.5 points for Detroit. In the two wins Minnesota took last year, the Lions averaged just 17 points. The Vikings have won four straight division games and nine of their last 12.
Dan Campbell, the Lions coach, said the matchup against the best team on paper offers a chance to prove their worth. He noted that the competition is a major motivator for the squad. Goff agreed, stating the team wants to beat the best to show what they are made of. The Lions just defeated the Green Bay Packers in their first division game of the season.
The last time the NFL saw a matchup between a team giving up 13 points or fewer and a team scoring 30 or more in Week 8 or later was in 2019. The Baltimore Ravens defeated the New England Patriots in that contest. The Ravens had the high-scoring offense, while the Patriots had the stout defense. That game ended the Patriots' winning streak.
The Vikings have the best start since 2009. They have a chance to go 7-0 for the first time since 2000. Minnesota leads the NFL in turnovers with a plus-7 differential. The team has seven interceptions, which ranks among the league leaders. The Lions have won two straight games for the first time this season. Their defense allowed an average of 19 points during that winning streak.
