Streaming platforms have long sought to capture the cultural weight of boxing’s most famous figures, but rights holders have rarely granted full creative control to outside studios. That hesitation ended this week in New York City, where the premiere of The Greatest marked the first scripted project to receive complete authorization from the Muhammad Ali estate.
The limited series consists of eight episodes that trace the life of Cassius Clay, the name he used from 1960 to 1964, through his rise to heavyweight champion. The narrative focuses on his early career and the personal tensions that defined his public identity. Jaalen Best portrays Ali, depicting the athlete during the period that established him as a global icon.
Lonnie Ali, the late boxer’s wife, serves as an executive producer on the project. Her involvement is central to the production, as she has spent decades safeguarding her husband’s legacy. The series aims to present a comprehensive view of Ali, looking beyond his ring victories to examine his family dynamics and his role as a public figure during a period of social change in the United States.
The production emphasizes historical accuracy, with costumes and sets designed to reflect the segregation and discrimination of the 1960s. The story revisits specific professional conflicts, including his rivalry with Sonny Liston. The drama also explores the personality and convictions that shaped Ali’s influence on sport and society.
Jordan, a producer on the series, attended the New York premiere and joined guests at an after-party at Storied NYC. His production company, Outlier Society, is developing the show alongside Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. According to Ebony Magazine, this project represents a continued expansion of Jordan’s work as a producer. The series is scheduled to debut on Prime Video on November 4.
