Two shootings on Halloween night near the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing left five people with gunshot wounds, police confirmed on Sunday. East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown addressed the media in the afternoon to outline the department's response to four separate incidents, two of which involved active gunfire.
The first incident occurred near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street. Brown reported that officers found multiple shots had been fired, resulting in three victims being transported to the hospital. Two of these individuals were listed in stable condition, while the status of the third victim was not immediately determined. Later that evening, a second shooting took place in the area of Stoddard and Frye Avenues. Police reported that two additional people were shot in this incident, and both are currently in stable condition.
Investigators recovered multiple firearms from the scene, though officials have not yet confirmed if those specific weapons were used to wound the victims. Brown stated that several individuals were taken into custody in connection with the violence. At the time of the press conference, police had not determined whether the two shootings were linked. It also remained unclear if any of the five victims were enrolled at Michigan State University.
A Michigan State University spokesperson noted that the Department of Police and Public Safety assisted East Lansing police during the response. The university clarified that the criminal activity did not occur on campus and did not pose a direct threat to the school. Brown added that the East Lansing Fire Department handled 91 total incidents over a 24-hour period, with 75 of those calls arriving on Halloween night.
