Jennifer Lawrence will reprise her role as Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming prequel, Sunrise on the Repeating. The Oscar winner confirmed the appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, marking her first public comments on the project since its announcement. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on Nov. 20 by Lionsgate.
Lawrence described the reunion with her original castmates as "unbelievable." She noted that the production team remained largely unchanged from the original films, including the assistant director with whom she worked extensively during the initial run. She characterized the reconnection with Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson as deeply emotional, stating that she and Hutcherson frequently spent time with their arms around one another.
The actress shared an anecdote about Harrelson during the shoot, joking that he "came through the window of my hotel room uninvited." She added that he "wouldn't be the same if he listened to boundaries or used a door." While Variety previously reported that Lawrence and Hutcherson would return as Katniss and Peeta Mellark, Lawrence revealed on the podcast that Harrelson will also appear as Haymitch.
The new installment centers on a young Haymitch, played by Joseph Zada, during the 50th Hunger Games. The story structure mirrors the epilogue of Suzanne Collins' novel, which features a flash-forward to the main characters. This narrative choice brings back the original trio for the final moments of the film.
Lawrence expressed interest in returning to the franchise as early as 2023. During a press tour for No Hard Feelings, she told reporters she was "totally" open to the idea. She stated at the time that if the character ever returned to her life, she would accept the role "100 percent."
The Hunger Games franchise has generated $3.3 billion in worldwide box office receipts. This total includes the four original films starring Lawrence, released between 2012 and 2015, and the 2023 prequel The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. The 2023 entry was led by Rachel Zegler.
On the podcast, Lawrence also revisited her initial hesitation about joining the series at age 20. She explained that her primary concern was the potential impact on her acting career and personal life. She recalled wanting to be a mother and feeling that the franchise diverged from her path of doing independent films. She noted that the success of Twilight had recently demonstrated the cultural weight of a major franchise.
